COUNTY LEGEND DIES

Richard (left) seen here with Andrew Taylor
Regarded by many County fans as the best ever right back to play for the club Richard Walden has sadly passed away. He died last night (17/11/09)
Richie, who was known as a Rolls Royce defender, had been suffering with myeloid leukaemia but went into remission earlier this year after fighting the illness with great courage. Unfortunately it came back a few months ago and with his resistance so low he had picked up other illnesses. Richard, who was born in Hereford, had joined County in 1978 from Sheffield Wedneday for a bargain £3.500, started his career at Aldershot and was a hugely popular player with fellow pro's and supporters. Richard made 656 Football League appearances in total 151 for the Ironsides. A full tribute by Andrew Talyor will appear in a few weeks time.

Former County and Wales star Mark Aizlewood today (13/11/09) admitted a 27 year battle with booze. Aizlewood, who also played for Luton Town Leeds United and Charlton Athletic has a new Welsh-language autobiography,
Amddiffyn fy Hun (Defending Myself) out on November 26th, says writing the book was a "painful and difficult experience," All proceeds from the book will go to former Arsenal defender Tony Adams' Sporting Chance clinic, which helps amateur and professional sports stars battling with behavioural problems. Disappointingly at present the book will only be published in Welsh, depending on sales of this version it might be then printed in English. Amddiffyn fy Hun, published by Gomer Press, hits the shelves on November 26 priced £7.99. Mark who has been sober for 5 years now and now lives in Chepstow working as an education consultant, running courses with the government. Mark revels in the book that as a 14 year old schoolboy on County's books he was paid £5 a week expenses, and on his debut in County's first team he was "kicked from pillar to post"
I am sure every County supporter wishes Mark all the best.

Honorary degree for Tony Pulis

Former County player and Stoke City Football Club's manager Tony Pulis has received an honorary degree.
The ex-Plymouth, Portsmouth, Bristol City, Gillingham and Bournemouth boss was given a doctorate by Staffordshire University for his services to sport.
Newport born Pulis, 51, helped Stoke to finish 12th in their debut campaign in the Premier League - their best finish in the league since the 1980/1 season.
Speaking at the university ceremony, he said he was "absolutely delighted" and it was "very, very special".
Pulis added: "I've been in this area now for five-and-a-half years and to get this award is different from the background I'm from. But I'm very proud - a very proud man."
Pulis became the Stoke manager for the second time in the summer of 2006, after originally taking charge in 2002.
He spent about £25m on 12 permanent signings and two loan players last season and the Potters came close to finishing in the top 10 in the Premier League after bookmakers predicted they would be relegated.
The manager said: "The most important thing in life is to prove to yourself that you can do it.
"The players were written off, it wasn't just me written off and they've come through with flying colours."
